CAROL SMITH

Ceramist and Artist

For local artist Carol Smith the last decade has been life-changing. During that time she has become a published poet and author, gained a BA in Fine Art, exhibited regularly, and is now a resident artist occupying Studio 5A.

Up until 2018 her art practice was mostly text based involving print, photography and projection; a throw back to her life as a darkroom technician, no doubt. However, her work took an unexpected turn when she discovered clay, and now she mainly focuses on ceramic sculptures, occasionally with the inclusion of metal.

Smith likes to experiment enjoying the meditative process of working with clay, and often lets the practice of making decide the finished form. Her glazes are influenced by the historic layers discovered locally as well as the ever changing patterns and colours observed on the surface of the River Medway.

Workshops are an important part of her practice. Smith takes great pleasure in passing on her love of working with clay to others. She runs a workshop on the last Saturday of the month alternating between hand building and glazing. To book a place please email crsmithceramics@gmail.com
