BEADS OF HOPE

BEADS OF HOPE

Commissioned by Kent and Medway Suicide Prevention Programme

Lead artist: Carol Smith

Beads of Hope was an artist-led community project facilitated by Nucleus Arts and funded by the Hope Community Arts Fund in partnership with the Creative & Cultural Economy Service.

The Nucleus Arts network, including Megan CIC, proved invaluable allowing us to reach people both on and off site. Multiple workshops invited people to make a Bead of Hope, giving people the chance to talk while they create.

The sculptural beads were created from biodegradable sellotape and decorated with various biodegradable materials caught between the layers. Once created the beads were threaded together to form a large sculpture of a beaded bracelet. This was exhibited in the Halpern Gallery in June and July 2023, and at the Turner Contemporary mid July.

The final sculpture invites reflection on how if we listen and offer support we are stronger together, while the use of sellotape gives hope of repair.

While the Beads of Hope was on display, workshops invited people to come along to the gallery to create their own beaded bracelet to take away and wear, continuing the project's aim of reaching out to the local community, keeping the spotlight on the subject of mental health, offering hope.
